# SafeExamOS > SafeExamOS turns a room of ordinary Ubuntu lab machines into a locked exam room for the length of an exam, then gives the room back. It restricts the machine and the network (a per-exam allowlist proxy, firewall rules, a non-admin exam account, USB storage blocked) instead of watching the student: no webcams, no microphones, no screen recording, no keystroke logging. Lab admins lock and restore whole labs from a jump host on their own network; instructors get seating plans and a log of every allowed and blocked request by seat and time. The core engine is open source under AGPLv3, stewarded by Justuju. Brand line: Lock the lab, not the student. It runs on lab machines only: no bring-your-own-device, no remote exams. Proven with CodeChef, DOMjudge and Moodle quizzes in exams of up to 239 students across four labs.
